Thomas Both

Thomas is a designer and design educator with a passion for helping people understand the practice of human-centered design—and their ability as designers—to innovate how they learn, think, and solve problems. He is a Stanford University adjunct professor and director of the Designing for Social Systems program at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design (the d.school) at Stanford. In this program, he teaches professionals how to apply design thinking to complex social challenges and facilitates workshops for social impact leaders to develop a more human and strategic practice.
Working with both students and professionals, Thomas has co-designed and co-led immersive hands-on experiences, including the Design Thinking Bootcamp executive workshop and various iterations of a d.school fundamentals course called Design Thinking Studio. From these programs, he co-developed methodologies and created free public resources such as the Bootcamp Bootleg. Thomas earned a master’s degree in design from Stanford after a previous career as a mechanical engineer.

David Janka

David is a healthcare designer working to bring the mindsets, techniques and creative energy of the design world to the development and delivery of healthcare products, services and experiences. He has worked with a variety of clients and partners in academia, the private sector and nonprofit sector to increase creative confidence, apply human-centered design and stimulate interdisciplinary collaboration.
Before starting a career in design, David was immersed in science and medicine, studying chemistry as an undergraduate and researching HIV in virology labs. He received his medical degree from Stanford University, where he focused on infectious diseases and spent a year as a clinical research fellow in Kampala, Uganda. Over the past decade, he has been a Stanford d.school fellow and taught graduate courses on design thinking and its application to complex systems in healthcare, the developing world, public policy and organization design. His most recent d.school class explored the early applications of virtual reality in healthcare and how to design experiences with this emerging technology.

Scott Witthoft

He is author of articles for the Conference Board and Harvard Business Review. His work has been featured in The Design Museum and magazines like Fast Company, Architecture and Urbanism, and Metropolis.
Scott has previously held faculty roles at Stanford University and The University of Texas at Austin. His courses include topics on design thinking and prototyping physical spaces & behaviors.
